Music Industry in Kenya
Kenyan Music
For many years our kenyan artistes have complained of kenyans not supporting the industry and this is evident through the latest research done that showed out of top 10 most streamed artisted on youtube in kenya, kenyan artisted are only 3 Sauti sol, Otile brown and Willy paul with the top 5 being from Tanzania. Last week a nigerian song made it top to top song most streamed in Apple music in kenya that led to Nigerians trolling our music industry. Out of 100 streamed songs in Apple Music kenya we only have 2 songs that are both by Bien of sauti sol. Kenyan artistes have continued to lament of them always being sidelined in events where they curtain raise for Nigerian artistes who are the main perfoming artistes. The government has not always been supportive of the industry paying artisted as low as 1500 to artistes who have invested thousands of money in their music. Bien-aime-sol of sauti sol has always been on the forefront urging kenyans to support the kenya music industry citing lack of exposure to good songs by the audience has contributed alot to the problem kenyan artistes are facing. Some may argue that the reason this is happening is because as a country we have no mainstream genre for example in Nigeria where they have afro or South Africa where they have Amapiano with both genres going global to a point artistes from the United States are vibing into their genre. As a country and a fans of kenyan music we long for the day our own Kenyan artistes will win international awards like the BET awards or the Grammy Awards that have always been the favourites of Nigeria and South Africa in the African Continent.

ReplyDeleteNice work❤️
ReplyDeleteI believe its just a general lack of ambition and business acumen amongst Kenyan musicians. Most musicians become contented with a fanbase of just a few thousand and they get into a comfort zone and they fail to compete and measure up to continental stars. The few internationally known Kenyan artists are where they are because of their ambition, creativity and hardwork. As kenyan musicians we need to stop whinning and face this challenge head on. I believe if we put our minds to it we van figure out how to make Kenyans choose kenyan music over foreign content.
